Her fingers were numb, and she wasn’t sure if it was because of the cold, since they hadn’t let her put on her hat, scarf or gloves, or because they had tied her bonds too tightly. The hard plastic of the snowmobile seat dug into her belly and ribs painfully, sending a jolt through her every time they went over a bump, but she was grateful all the same. She was still alive, when they could have easily killed her as she slept.

Her stomach twisted as she remembered how frightening it had been to wake up to the sensation of her arms being twisted behind her back, hard, and a large plastic zip tie closing over her wrists. The man who had snuck in to Kristoff’s cave, the others called him Jones, had clamped one big hand over her mouth and told her not to make a sound or he’d hurt her. The chieftain wanted her alive, he’d said, but there were many ways they could hurt her. Then he’d slapped a thick piece of duct tape over her mouth, and she hadn’t been able to do more than make muffled moans. Now, shooting through the dark to some unknown destination, where they might want to hurt or kill her, her stomach roiled with churning fear, and her heart beat like a jack-hammer in her chest. Kristoff, she whispered in her mind, please find me soon.

She lost track of time as they traveled. She saw the landscape whizzing by, but it was all trees and snow—nothing distinguishing that would help her find her way back to Kristoff’s cave if she could escape. After a while, her eyes grew tired of constantly refocusing on the sideways view so she quit trying so hard to focus on her surroundings and instead turned her thoughts to her captors. There were four of them, but Jones seemed to be the leader. From what little they had said to each other, it was clear the others deferred to his judgment on decisions. She wondered if perhaps she could appeal to his sympathy, but the memory of his hard black eyes and the disgust on his face made her discard that idea quickly. He was definitely not her biggest fan.

The other men were younger and she thought, or maybe hoped was the most accurate term, that they were merely going along out of a sense of loyalty to their leader. She remembered reading once that it was much more difficult for someone to kill you once they saw you as a person. She vowed to herself that she would strike up a conversation with one of the others as soon as possible once they stopped. Provided that someone removed the duct tape. And boy was that going to hurt. She stuck her tongue out again, pushing against the tape and moistening it further. It seemed to help, and the moisture was slowly creeping outward, but she had a long way to go before she’d make any serious headway on loosening it.
